UNI-T UT50E Multimeter
« on: February 01, 2015, 10:12:37 am »
Hi  there

Did anybody already test the UT50E from the UNI-T UT50-II series?
http://www.uni-trend.com/en/product/2014_0801_927.html

I did not find any information in this forum - or did I miss something?

I don't think I have ever seen anyone do a review on it. I only see 2 or 3 minute publicity videos on youtube. I would guess the strange appearance and the manual ranging put people off even trying it. You could be the first to review it here if you buy it.

$60 or so is not too expensive but $50 will get you the more recent and probably better built UT139C.

I played with one in a UK shop and liked it a lot. The backlight is not great and the manual ranging was not for me, but it was discussed here as a viable solution for someone visually impaired.

Must be a sign of a misspent youth, when I look at that meter I see a pint of lager! :P

How do you know which model is newer?
I did not find a release date ...

The UT139C was released last year I think. It is newer than the UT50 and most probably has much better input protection than the UT50 series.

Yes, the UT139C definitely has the better protection!

The UT50E on the other hand has a 20k count and a better precision (at least what the datasheet says).
Furthermore there are some applications where I prefer the dedicated ON/OFF switch.

No fuse on the amps range :o. The 139C is true RMS with double the bandwidth and has auto-ranging. Also 10MHz frequency instead of 20kHz for the 50E.
Still a nice meter if you can live with its shortcomings. Not legal in Europe anymore though.
Auto backlight and ON/OFF pushbutton are unusual features.

Just for my workbench. Voltage below 30V.

ok, I got one of these - and an UT139  ^-^.

I like the fact, that I can leave the rotary switch at its current position and switch it on and off.
This is perfect when you have it in a certain measuring setup.

What I recognized is a very poor precision of the Capacitance measurement (compared to the other DMMs I own).

Did somebody make similar observations?
Does anybody have an idea why this could be the case?
And is there a way to adjust that? (Sending it back to the distributor is to cost-intensive))

The UT50 is about $30-35US on ebay now.
I have a much older meter with an on-off button (and auto-off after inactivity), and I like that feature.
Whatever you get used to will work, I think.
BTW, I have a UT139 somewhere in the pipeline from China to my place...never too many meters, I guess. :-DD
