Tip pin multimeter adapters
« on: June 25, 2014, 09:33:36 pm »
All,

Pickup up a cheap analog meter that only has tip pin inputs. Curious what people use for adapters for probes (if they have any that use these style of connectors), and more interestingly, anyone know if 2mm banana plugs will fit into a 2mm tip pin jack? If they do, I'd be tempted to buy something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-pcs-2mm-Gold-Plated-Banana-Plug-to-4mm-Banana-Jack-Test-Adapte-Cable-20cm-/180910165597

If not, probably just pick up a couple of the Pomona 1432-0's.

Help?

Do you mean an audio style mono tip/sleeve (TS) plug/jack?

What you want looks something like these probes:
http://www.tequipment.net/UeiATL85.html
But I can't tell from the picture if they fit standard pin jacks.
2 mm banana is probably too big.  Maybe you could peel the banana.  The pin inside might fit.

It's best to find a set of the correct leads.  They used to be fairly common and cheap.he

Edit: it looks like some pin jacks are 2mm.  Are yours?  If so, it might not fit right because some pin jacks only wipe on one side and the banana plug will fit lopsided and make intermittent contact.  Or, it might work.

nope, tip pin. basically, they're jacks that look just like the female end of some standard probe tips (hence the name). =P

Ah yeah... though, leads would be more of a pain than just some adapters. Probably just buy the pomonas. =P

Ah right sorry, I didn't look up the Pomona you mentioned

http://www.mouser.com/ds/2/159/d1432_1_01-69065.pdf

"2mm" banana plugs are closer to 2.4-2.5mm diameter and about 3/4 the length, so depending on the tolerance of the tip pin socket you may not fit the banana in

Would something like these work for you? They are basically probe tip (2mm diameter) attachment for standard 4mm shrouded or unshrouded banana plugs, but might work for your purpose. I don't stock these but just happen to have one pair lying around while sampling stuff from my supplier. Let me know if you want them.

Will do. I just ordered a few more of these from my supplier, should receive them just before I leave for my holiday so if you need them quick I can try to ship them before I leave for a few weeks.

Got them, and they're perfect! Not only do they fit the meter perfectly, but they solve an issue I've had for a while, which is using these http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11390149 without the added bulk of having full probes inline. I will definitely buy another set of these when you have them in stock. =) And, I gotta say, fastest delivery from HK to the US ever: took less than a week!

Thanks!
