I've had me 61E for a while now and thought I'd like to connect it to the computer, put the software in and the bugger just will not work, keep telling me the usb cable is not in correctly. I've tried New Drivers , download the software from their site, and still the stubborn bloody thing refuses to work, the only way I could the cable in any better is to ram it through the front of the computer until I reach the back panel. god I hate software, and computers in a close second place. the computer I have in on windows 7 ,64bit, is there any software out there that works.

Are you using a RS232-USB converter plus the RS232 cable that comes with the meter, or are you using the Uni-T UT-D04 USB cable? I've found many of those RS232-USB converters (especially the cheaper ones) do not work well with the UT61E.

The cheap converters are almost 100% clones and will only work with the drivers which came with them. And then not work that well.

Yes I am using a usb converter,& I think when it was bought it was about $7.00 so you think thats the problem, any reccomendations, I understand chip set has something to do with it, so do I need one with a FTDI chip set, I have no idea I just been reading up. |O

Yes I think I'm coming that conclusion quickly.

Frankie (iloveelectronics) might be able to sell you a Uni-T UT-D04.

If you want to, you can build one yourself. It will be a bit more expensive but at least you'll have the pleasure of having built one.
You'll need a serial to usb converter chip and optionally a ttl to proper serial chip and maybe the serial port connector if you want to:
MAX232 (ttl serial to real serial) : http://goo.gl/M8eZW0 (http://goo.gl/M8eZW0) (list of compatible chips, mile long Farnell UK url, shortened it to work on forum) .. cheapest ones are under a pound, DIP packaged ones are about 1 uk pound .. for example this one will work just fine: http://uk.farnell.com/texas-instruments/max232in/rs232-driver-receiver-dual-16dip/dp/1648737 (http://uk.farnell.com/texas-instruments/max232in/rs232-driver-receiver-dual-16dip/dp/1648737)
How to wire it is in datasheet, very easy.
FT232HL (or another one from FTDI) http://uk.farnell.com/ftdi/ft232hl-reel/interface-usb-uart-fifo-48lqfp/dp/1870924 (http://uk.farnell.com/ftdi/ft232hl-reel/interface-usb-uart-fifo-48lqfp/dp/1870924)
Optionally you can get a LQFP48 to through hole (dip/whatever) board from eBay so you won't have to solder directly onto a prototyping board with thin wires or something like that.
Here's some examples:

Thank you M, this has got my interest. ;D

My UT61e from Franky with serial cable does work with serial2usb adpater from Logilink (out of brain, can look deeper) does work right out of the box.
OS: Debian wheezy.
I avoid Windows as much as possible >:D
