Upgrading Tektronix TLA704 with TLA721 Controller Board impossible?
(1/1)

Hi guys,
a long time ago I had seen someone upgrade his TLA704 (or 714?) with a Controller Board from a TLA721, but for the life of it I can't find the page anymore.
I have the parts already (my working TLA704 and a TLA721 controller module in said-to-be-working condition), so I tried on my own now, but I'm unfortunately stuck with a black internal screen.
Does anybody know if this upgrade should be possible at all?
Maybe it's just one of the jumpers that needs to be set to enable the display controller for the internal screen? But I have not found any documentation of the controller board.
Mechanically the board roughly fits with the exception of 2 external connectors that have slightly moved by a mm. It does power on and starts booting.
It does bluescreen after the W2K logo, but that might purely be a software issue, I don't think it has anything to do with the display problem. Even without a HDD at all I'd expect to see the BIOS screen on the internal display just like I do with the TLA704 controller.
It seems possible that a TLA721 controller requires some reconfiguration to be used in a TLA715(/714/704) chassis due to the differences like the display or number of slots.
Maybe someone has tried the same, knows the website I had remembered about the upgrade, or has a documentation about the TLA715/721 controller board, which barely is documented in the service manuals. I'd be very grateful.
Thanks!
Stephan

Hi RomDump!
Incredible you found that! That was not the page I remembered, but indeed this guy did it too!
The downside is that there really is no way around replacing the display, adding signal conversion and finding a way to mount the new display. That's a bit less plug&play than I had hoped (or remembered), so not yet sure if I should really go that route.
But thank you for digging it out!
Stephan
