UPS or Inverter for powering test equipment recomendation?
« on: August 03, 2019, 06:06:35 am »
I need to buy  an inverter to  power  my Siglent Spectrum Analyzer  from my car to make some EMC measurements.  I  am looking for recomendation on a brand that is clean EMC wise and something that is well protected and Sinewave clean.

Most of the manufacturers dont have performance data  nor do they have EMC data on their web pages. APC has some data for conducted and radiated emissions  but no data for radiated emissions  for below 30mhz. The lab that they use in Taiwan does not seem to be very sophisticated so i dont trust their data.

I was leaning more towards a UPS because modern cars produce a lot of EMI pollution when running. I would still be interested in hearing about how you guys power your test instruments in portable field situation. I did try my Honda inverter generator but that was spewing out garbage everywhere, its totally filthy.

Surely some toriods clipped on a extension lead and away from the generator can get emissions down to where you can do some tests. Also the SSA use a SMPS so the supply quality to it within reason shouldn't affect its operation in the least.
I'd suck it and see.

I don't have any specific recommendations, but I do remember watching this video where the Siglent guys had done some experiments with that SSA on portable power.  They had some recommendations in it IIRC.

Thanks, I will look into that information from Siglent.

The Honda EU series of generators cant be  choked off. I tried Schaffner EMC filters and Ferrite common chokes using 43#, 31# etc etc. WHen you have a EMC dog fixing it can  be difficult. I have some Meanwell power supplies  that are horrendous and Meanwell does not propose a filter system that will meet approvals.

Thanks

I would take any published data about EMC  from any inverter/UPS manufacturer with a very large grain of salt :)

Why not rent a battery powered spectrum analyzer if your need is short term?
