Rigol DP-832A P.S. : How do you save and recall state?
« on: April 21, 2022, 11:20:58 pm »
I have a Rigol DP-832A triple output power supply.   It seems to have a menu for saving state and recalling state after a new power on.  It has 10 state slots.
But the user manual only mentions it and shows the screen. It does not explain what key sequence to hit if you actually want to use it.
Frankly, it is amazing just how worthless that section of the user manual is.
Google.com finds nothing about saving and recalling config/state for this power supply.
Does anyone here know how this works?   Can someone please explain how I can use it to save the config of all 3 PS settings, so that when I next
power on, I don't need to manually configure voltage and current for each of the three supply outputs?

Sincere Thanks,

Neal

On the DP832A, there are several ways to restore previous settings.

1) To have it power on to the same settings as the last power off, go to 'Utility -> System' and then press 'Power On' to go from 'Default' (factory default settings) to 'Last' (last power off settings). Pressing 'Power On' multiple times cycles between the two possibilities.

2) To program the 'Preset' hard key (upper right corner of the front panel), go to 'Utility' -> (page 2) and use multiple presses of the 'Preset' soft key to cycle through either 'Default' or one of the four user settings at the top of the screen.  Each of the four user settings can be programmed here using the soft keys.  To save changes go to the second page and select 'OK'.  Whichever user setting number (or Default) was left highlighted when you exit out of the 'Preset' settings will be the one that is set when you later press the 'Preset" hard key on the front panel (it will ask if you are sure each time you press that key).

3) You can save the current settings into a file for later recall.  Press the 'Store" hard key and then press the 'Type' soft key and make sure that the file extension is set to '.rsf' (state file).  Now go to page 2 and select the back arrow to go back to the Store menu.  Select 'Browser' and choose one of the 10 internal file storage slots using the scroll wheel.  Press the 'Save' button, give the file a name with the scroll wheel and then press 'OK'.  Later you can go back to the Browser, choose a .rsf file, and then press 'Read" to restore its settings into the main display.

Regarding option three, WOW, they really wanted to make it tough.  That is just nuts.
What is the point of having 10 numbered state save slots, if you then actually need to create a filename
with a scroll wheel to save the state? Why not just let me enter a state slot number like 1 through 10
and push enter?
On Keysight and other equipment, you just select save state, pick a slot number, and enter.  Done.

Whatever the Rigol user-interface (sic) engineers were smoking.....  Um, er, ah, I really DON'T want any...

That said, sincere thanks for sharing how to use the 3 features.  It is a shame that Rigol did not simply
put what you said into the user manual. (at least, not in a way that most humans could decipher)
