Used DSO gear market & prices
« on: April 10, 2022, 08:31:47 am »
As I was looking for a faster DSO as 20G/s and even more, I am come to the conclusions:

. all are HEAVY overpriced

. Almost no production year given even asking for a quote

. Almost no probes included  :--

. Unknown state about replacement parts as it gets soon terrible expensive

. Capacitor as after 10 years  :-- or burning CPU's

In other words, about the price calculation, I expect a "depreciation rate" for each year as on company cars market...

One could blamed by calibrated gear, for sure, the real MTBF after years will count and looks like a "Black Cat" purchase...

So no real used bargain on earth  :palm:  :palm:

So at the end of the day, renting would be a solution, but shipping & return over boarders / Customs would be an other pain.

Yes... the mourning thread of the year... please replace "DSO" with "Anything"... as the mourning applies to almost Anything...

The price per unit of performance of DSOs seems to drop over the years, so the old, used DSO at a given performance level would have been even more expensive new than an equivalent model today.  The prices you are seeing are quite depreciated--but the risk is also high.  A good new scope for you might be the Tek MSO68B.  Nicely configured with extra memory and 25GSa/s on 4 channels (half that on 8) it would run you $135,000 - $180,000 or so.  That includes nice 1GHz passive probes.

A (very) roughly equivalent scope in old, used inventory might be a 10-12 year old Agilent Infiniium DSO80000 series.  These can be had in working condition with nominal warranties from used equipment dealers for $10-15k.  I don't know what they cost new, but I'm pretty sure the depreciation in percentage is a lot more than my 12 year old car.
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.
