UT-61E+ & UT-D07B usb dongle, connect to PC
« on: November 07, 2024, 10:03:12 am »
I have Uni-T UT-61E+ multimeter and just received the UT-D07B usb dongle. Dongle is powered up and inserted into multimeter. S icon for serial communication appears.

On my PC I have software installed and USB device is paired. However, when I click connect button in the software, it says failed to open device.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong! Please help.

Please don't tell me that this thing only works with USB cable. Because if that's the case I would get rid of it.

Perhaps this adapter is designed only with the IDMM2.0 application (Android/iOS).

Got it working with iPhone. Procedure is like so. You launch the app. There is that QR code scan icon on the main screen with a - sign inside a square. You scan QR code form the bluetooth dongle and it works. Then you disconnect it and try it again, and it doesn't work. So it works with iPhone, but not every time.

Now wish me luck here trying to connect it to PC.

BTW.. I noticed, S icon on multimeter only appears when app is connected. Just inserting dongle into multimeter does not connect the dongle to multimeter.

Guys, browsed the internet and youtube and found out that this dongle is crap by default. Many people have problems.  :-//
But no worries, I found what the problem is.
There is no communication with the multimeter.

By disassembling the multimeter and feeding it voltage from PSU, and then bringing close the LEDs of the dongle it immediately beeps and connects. Now, the dongle itself could be crap, but there is no way to open it, it is welded together via ultrasonic. So the problem has to be solved on multimeter side. I still haven't worked on the problem, just figured out where to look.

The obvious solution could be raising the LEDs on the multimeter closer to the lenz, or removing the lenz alltogether. I'll keep you posted.

Though, still, connecting it to PC is someways away and is unknown if it can be done or not. We are talking just about making it talk with the iPhone. By the way, I bought it here -- https://aliexpress.ru/store/4871131
Official Uni-T Factory Store, they dont' have it in stock nomore, I guess they are tired of problems and disputes. I got it with official Uni-T reciept with my name on it.

Nice! But sucks!

About 11 minutes in, you can see the A revision of the BLE adapter being used with my UT181A.

Lucky for me, other's had already reverse engineered the protocol which greatly reduced my efforts.  I am not sure what the difference is with the Rev B hardware but maybe they used the same protocol.
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/uni-t-ut-d07a-bluetooth/

While one of the well respected reviewer's out of Canada claims the BLE interface was not reliable,
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/uni-t-ut181a-board-revisions-esd-robustness/msg2833944/#msg2833944

that was far from my own experience.

Could you provide download link for the software? I bet it might work with this multimeter.

Yea, no support for PC. Sucks. Short of running android app in some emulator.

I finally made it work with iPhone. Making it work involved getting rid of the lenz, cutting the holes and lengthening the LEDs. Now whether dongle is on or off it says S all the time in multimeter. Though, it works.
