Krautkramer Ultrasonic Flaw Detector. Rack mounted.

Hi there! I've recently acquired this unit and I have absolutely no idea of what it is. I know it is a Ultrasonic Flaw Detector made by krautkramer and not much more. I couldn't fin any pics on internet, manuals, catalogue pics or schematics. The model seems to be the USE4 or USK4?

Yes, good old times. Krautkramer did produce a range of ultrasonic inspection devices and where top of the bill.
When searching for "non destructive testing" you will find a lot of information on these technologies.
In order to use this instrument you will need a (NDT) ultrasonic transducer. The frequencies ranging from 100kHz -25Mhz. The output of this specific instrument can be compared to a TDR test on coaxial cables. Reflections and impedance changes will be visible. One of the applications is to check for flaws and cavities in glue joints. Another area of inspection was the inspection of the booster tank sealing on the space shuttle after the unfortunate accident.

The particular unit looks pretty old and is pretty specialised, so likely not much info to be found.  Also not much use to the average persion, even if you had a compatible transducer.

There may be manufacturing companies out there still using that outdated equipment though, so it may have value to the right buyer as "spare parts".  It is surprising what old equipment you find still in use in industry.

Would make a good movie prop, especially if you can get a trace on the screen

They wouldnt use the screen on movies. Been onto a set a couple of times and the tv's had tapes and marks on their screen that they later edited on post.

Yes, most of the time the screen on a TV set will be a sheet of green paper, and it will be chromakey inserted during post production, so that they can avoid any reflections of the set on the otherwise reflective glass.

There is more modern Ultrasonic testing equipment* at work, with lots of different transducers depending on the use, they are used for checking steel parts for cracks & flaws, I'm not going to say what the parts are, but they are safety critical.

Re: TV's & movies, probably also masked off the screen as the frame rates will differ, resulting in a flickering picture, unless it's been modified/designed for that use.
