Very old lcr meter
« on: May 22, 2022, 03:49:36 pm »
I recently got a very old lcr meter for free. but even after reading a manual i found on Google, it still makes No sense to me.

Does anyone know something or can lead me to someone who does? :)

Nice instrument

Try to test it with a known resistor (i.e. ~5k Ohm)

Set the range switch to 10k Ohm range

Press "R" and adjust the dial (upper right corner) for a center reading on the left meter

Read the resistance on the top scale

I tried doing as you said, but Nothing happened :(.
I tried looking in the back and found something about some external bias?

Nice looking instrument.  Questions:
1.  If you can find a manual, does the "external bias" need to be shorted when not in use?
2.  I don't see a switch on the front panel for internal/external AC source:  does it require an external generator?  I own some Wayne-Kerr and General Radio bridges that do not have an internal generator.

A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

Interesting.  The manual discusses connecting an external AC or DC supply (the latter must be a battery), but I couldn't find anything about switching between internal (100 or 1000 Hz, depending on range) and external generators.
I keep forgetting that younger people no longer learn how to balance a bridge, since everything is digital.  The manual does tell you how to adjust the setting (as indicated on the moving pointer) to get a minimum on the small meter.

schematic tell : in R mode switch 801A to internal DCV source
- only C mode could get AC source and external DC offset for ceramic capacitors ... otherwise external bypass short must be used

clean silver oxide from switch contacts with IPA and protect with dielectric lube - and you will get stable results from instrument

meter use choper amplifier - cool

Are those spring push connectors in your first photo?

I wish I had a few, if that's what they are.

My Genrad LCR Bridge has bias connectors. Not necessary to connect them.

I have had six of those push connectors many years.  I don't remember where I got them, but I use them regularly.
