VICI VC8145 New software for Linux ( and Windows coming soon )
« on: December 24, 2018, 03:42:16 am »
For people wanting a simple interface on linux for the VICI VC8145,  have written up

   https://github.com/inflex/VC8145

Linux version uses SDL2 for the GUI, it also offers data logging.  Easy to drop it to CLI only as well with some code removal.

Windows version will come up later, requires a bit of a change in the GUI & serial code of course but the decoding of the protocol/data is done.

NOTE - If you buy one of these meters and hook it up via USB, unless you have a good USB->serial cable which provides power to the serial port, you will encounter loss of data from the port and a lot of bad data frames.  Either go true serial port, or get a very good cable (even the genuine FTDI cables don't always provide enough power ).

Two videos on the process of writing it up;

Part 1 -
Part 2 -

I stripped the opto couplers and associated components from the RS232 section in my VC8145, and fitted an HC05 bluetooth module.  Very easy to do, utilizing the existing 5 pin connector, and it works brilliantly.

Currently writing a Mac app to interface with it, using the protocol data floating around on the web.

I have written a Windows 10 application that can be download from my homepage.  It is not based on other work, so you may notice some "things."  See: http://hardandsoftware.net/Downloads.htmhttp://hardandsoftware.net/Downloads.htm  It is free, of course.

Thanks for the tip, I will try it later with my meter.

Meanwhile, I have been using another opensource alternative called VC8145 Control, it works without a problem with Win10 as well: https://www.26th.net/public/projects/vc8145/

That's vastly more comprehensive indeed!   Agreeably, I write these small versions strictly so I can use them with OBS for youTube streaming and keeping CPU load down :)

You can also use this program for the VC8145:

I believe it works on Windows, Linux and Mac

Another exceptionally complete suite.  Definitely if I'm going to be doing logging / multi-device setups like that it'll be the sort of software I'll grab too.

Even with one device connected it can do a lot more stuff than standard multimeter software.
The only thing missing is analog display and a limits alarm, do anybody ever use these functions? The missing limits alarm may in some cases be replaced by scripts, the software can easily turn a power supply or load off when the voltage or current passes a specified limit.
