Thanks for the pictures. The switches seem unusual for a multimeter, unusually expensive. Are they all momentary?

backlight and peak hold are momentary
power and AC/DC are toggle switches.

Thanks for the teardown.  Interesting combination of through hole and SMD.  I'm surprised to see input protection.

What is this yellow thing ? spark gap ? gas discharge tube ? or simply a cap ?

(marked as C2*  on top right)

It's a polyester film capacitor. Looks different because it doesn't have an opaque dip like most of the ones you'll see do.

Thank you very much for sharing the tear down photos :). By the way, the current price (http://alimahjoob68.mihanblog.com/post/11) at Tehran's Amjad Electronics Bazaar is IRR 900k (less than $30).

as far as i'm aware electronic equipments are imported with government's dollars (what is the correct english word for 'Arze Dolati'?! ) which is ~ IRR 26k per one USD. so IRR900k/26 = ~35USD... maybe i'm wrong. i bought my unit 2-3 years ago. :)

Based on a previous personal experiment, I am almost sure that subsidized governmental exchange is not allocated for Electronics Testing and Measurement equipment. In addition to that, the current Customs Tariff (http://www.irica.gov.ir/Portal/Home/Default.aspx?CategoryID=82cebca0-58cc-4be6-bef5-a94e2242140a) for digital multi-meters (HS-Code 90303100) is 15%. If we add shipment costs, importer margin and retail sales margin to that, the price should be much higher.

Maybe the whole batch of this multimeter was imported before 2012 currency downfall (Iranian year 1390) during the time that each US$ value was around IRR 12k :-//.
