Voltcraft DSO-1102D vs Rigol DS1054E
« on: November 21, 2014, 10:49:21 pm »
Ok, so with the recent discovery (for me anyway) of the ac problem with rigol, would the voltcraft be a good substitute?
This one is 100MHZ instead of 50MHZ for the rigol.

Or.. would the ac trigger(or coupling , can't remember) not be a problem for a beginner/restarter like me ?
Only time i used scopes was when i repaired crt/tft pc monitors like , 10 years ago..

Voltcraft: http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/product/1009672/VOLTCRAFT-DSO-1102D-2-channel-oscilloscope-Digital-Storage-oscilloscope?ref=searchDetail

can't find any reviews of the voltcraft one,so i ask here  :-//

There is no Rigol DS1054E.  You must mean the DS1054Z, or perhaps the DS1052E.

The DS1052E has no "ac problem", so you're probably discussing the DS1054Z.

Once you know about the DS1054Z's jitter problem with an AC coupled trigger, it's not difficult to avoid the problem.  Avoiding AC coupled triggering entirely may be slightly inconvenient, but plenty of people have confessed that they had been avoiding it for years because they didn't know about it!

Before you make your decision, look at the number of input channels, the intensity grading of the display, the maximum memory depth, and the sample rate.

For me, a four channel scope with a poor AC coupled trigger would be more useful than a two channel scope with a perfect AC coupled trigger.

:-+ The DS1054Z without AC coupling is infinitely more useful than a 2 channel, bottom of the barrel scope. remember that the DS1054Z can be hacked to mulirple features, such a 100Mhz, 24Mpts memory and serial trigger/decoding.
I'm not saying we should kill all stupid people. I'm just saying that we should remove all product safety labels and let natural selection do its work.

the voltcraft is 100MHZ and the rigol DS1054Z is 50.
I have no need for 4 channels , so..

tequipment has a DS1102E (2 channels Rigol, previous generation) for $379 new or $329 for a demo is model both with free shipping and a eevblog discount.

http://www.tequipment.net/search/?F_Keyword=ds1102e

This won't have the "bug" in the DS1000Z series, but they will probably fix that in time.  Honestly I'd take a DS1054Z even with the issues over a previous generation less capable scope.

Good luck!

As janengelbrecht already said: This is a rebadged Hantek/Tekway/whatnot scope. Dave has done a review on them (janengelbrecht linked to that, too).
Seems you did not watch it. Because if you did, I doubt you would even consider this scope.

You dont want the DS1054Z because of the AC trigger issue? Thats peanuts in comparison to the voltcraft's ringing problems. Hint: Watch the video linked above from 33:00 onwards.
This "voltcraft" scope cannot even compare to the DS1000Z series. Especially not for the price. Remember: It cost more than the DS1054Z does.
Intensity grading? nope! serial decoding? nope! 12/24Mpts memory? not even close! 30k waveforms/s? more like 30!  The list goes on...

Honestly I'd take a DS1054Z even with the issues over a previous generation less capable scope.
This. And not because I like rigol, but because it is the best bang-for-buck in the market at this time.

In the end, its your decision. But I have the feeling that you do not know enough about these 2 scopes to make that decision just yet. Collect some more information and compare them before you spend your money on something you might regret later on.
