WaveSurfer 42Xs - retrofit options
« on: December 07, 2020, 03:22:21 pm »
I have an old WaveSurfer 42Xs (Windows XP-based) which is working fairly well. The memory was upgraded from 256MB to 512MB which improved the instrument from painfully slow to almost useable - similar boot-up times to the 4-ch 64Xs model. The Celeron-class CPU in these scopes doesn't have NX-bit support, so in theory you could not go past Win7 32-bit with this instrument. Also, the HDD is 2.5" PATA.

I'm still interested in improving its performance if possible. Has anyone replaced the HDD in one of these scopes with an SSD? How about more RAM - has anyone made this scope work with 1 or 2 GB of RAM? Has anyone tried to move it up to Windows 7 from XP?

I see no problems upgrading from a HDD to SSD, just make sure the interface is just right, clone the driver (or fresh reinstall if you can)

I've never done that to T&M equipment but, did to a few HMIs, always chose SSDs from advantech, a little more expensive but worth the endurance for harsh industrial environments
