What can I do with an HP 83751A sweeper?
« on: November 26, 2022, 09:13:20 pm »
Hi,

Got this HP 83751A 2 - 20 GHz Synthesized Sweeper offered to me.
https://www.keysight.com/be/en/product/83751A/synthesized-sweeper-2--20-ghz.html

I'm not an HF guy and barely understand what it can be used for, but since I have that test equipment addiction.... maybe I should get it....

What is such a thing worth today (I mean $€£)? Is it still somewhat actual or would it fall in the totally obsolete category?

Let see what it can be used for...

1. door stop
2. space heater
3. boat anchor

all jokes aside, if you have a spectrum analyzer, you can use it to generate RF signals between 2-20 GHz and do scalar analysis of devices in this frequency range. amplifiers, attenuators, filters, mixers (if you have another LO source). you could also test bandwidth of other test equipment by generating high frequency signals that typical function generator cannot do

I would estimate that working 83751A could fetch between 1-3K USD on ebay depending on conditions, options...

Did not acquire it as it has a low band IF error and the asking price is through the roof. It was not worth the risk especially as I have no experience repairing this kind of equipment.

good decision  loll

Servicing theses can or could be problematic ....

I have given an hp synthetized generator to a friend  am fm  0-520 Mhz,  he had so much troubles to service it, But managed to repair it

It had fallen on a floor, front panel deformed, handles broken, power switch broken,  some signal connectors broken,    luckily it had  some dual frame who saved everything else  ...
