Looking for new programmable bench supply 60V/6A
« on: January 22, 2017, 01:06:20 am »
Hi, I´m new here. Sorry for my bad english.

I´m looking for new bench power supply. I prefer single or dual channel output with 0-60V range and max. current 3-6 A (it depends on pricing). I saw some PSUs with multirange output current (like BK Precision 9200 series), so that can be pretty useful for me – it could replace all my shitty low-voltage lab PSUs.

Primary use is for testing high power DC/DC convertors.

What I need:
min. 60V@3-6A single channel (prefer multirange)
programmable
well-readable display (LCD or OLED)
low noise, but it might not be linear PSU
CC mode
usable software and datalogging

1. candidate: Rigol DP832 (428 USD)
- dual channel 30V/3A connected to serial to give 60V/3A + 5V/3A
= positive: low price, nice LCD display, maybe friendly interface, linear topology
= cons: no multirange (insufficient current at lower voltage :bullshit:), dimensions
https://www.rigolna.com/products/dc-power-supplies/dp800/

2. candidate: BK Precision Model 9202 (880 USD)
- single channel 60V/6A (up to 15A at 24V)
= positive: hi-power, multirange, smaller dimensions, better quality
= cons: more expensive, worse display, switching topology
http://www.bkprecision.com/products/power-supplies/9202-360w-multi-range-60v-15a-dc-power-supply.html

I have any price limit, but there must be a really good reason to buy more expensive device. I´m still student (with good income), but please, respect that.

Any advice?  :(

What about GW Instek power supplies?

the bk supplies are made by itech.

you can search their PSU range on tequipment.net, they cheaper than the BK rebadge. same models...

I got one of these, it's brand new in unopened box , they accepted 400€ as offer , and shipping was fair.

TDK-LAMBDA GEN100-15 LABOR-NETZTEIL, 100 V/15 A, 1500 W

It's not low noise and you might need a large Bench  ;)  - But a great PSU, and has GPIB & RS232
I think the Keysight is an OEM of this one.

You could even drive most equipment if it has a 110/230v switchmode psu inside.

I also have this one, a nice switcher (max 200w), but think the TDK-Lambda is more versatile. And shipping from US is prob a killer.

 Thank you guys,

:-+ Itech looks great, more then 80 USD cheaper then BK, thats nice. I changed my 1. favorite.

TDK is kickass, especially for this price and overall quality. But I am looking for something with friendlier interface. And there is possibly problem with outputs on the back side.

HP/Agilent is "used" and old. I believe is that high quality PSU, but it will need recap and maybe calibration. I am not a big fan of buying old devices and after that spent many hours on general maintance :)

btw. just looking into BK Precision datasheet – they mentioned ripple 15 mVpp, is not too much for high precision measuring? Rigol DP832 have max. 2mVpp (is that real?). I uderstand, linear topology have much lower noise and ripple, but all other switching PSU beside linar PSU looks horrible. What do you think?

What about the Korad. Bit shy on the current though, only to 5A

Korad are low-end chinese lab supplies. Dave made video about one of them and its full of rubish (and failed in testing), but for begginers or someone who have electronics as hobby, it is not bad choice.

Something similar made Itech/BK Precision and it is more expensive, but still nothing special (and a week ago I read about problems with these small units from BK).

Edit: I´ve get sickness from ebay sellers, why they dont sending to neighbouring contries? Specially from Germany...

They are Chinese, but wouldn't necessarily consider them low-end. Dave did a followup video. BK I don't think is much better especially for their lower end models.

Re: Chinese shipping, it's likely because the company is run in the neighbouring countries but they ship from China. Must be a tax thing. See it all the time
