Which tip for Metcal soldering iron?
(1/1)
Faringdon:
Hi,
We have metcal MX-500-P and a metcal MX-500P-21 solder stations.
We have the following tips for them.
METCAL TIPS
STTC 038 1286 2014 (...LOOKS NICE SIZE)
STTC 017 9130 2063 (....5MM SCREWDRIVER TIP)
STTC 017 3125 1636 (....4MM SCREW DRIVE)
STTC 136 0255 0177 (......2MM NICE BIG)
STTC 138 1285 0645 (.......NOT SUPA FINE BUT GOOD)
STTC 125 1281 1641 (........NICE FINE)
Only the STTC 017 3125 1636 works with the MX-500P iron.
(but even that doesnt work all the time)
Do you know why?
Do you know where is a table showing which tip for which iron?

Maybe there's a bad connection in the handle or cable.
Maybe, if its the handle where the tips attaches, that one tip that works could be slightly wider than the others allowing it to work sometimes.
AFAIK all those tips 'should' work. But I don't have metcal I have the thermaltronics equivalent .
Anything STTC and SMTC should work on MX-500

Yes. Something is broken.

Yes I do.
It took me less than a minute to find the document and verify it has that information. Are you so incapable you can't use a search engine?

Are the tips you mentioned new? If not, the tips might be old and worn out. The heating element is in the tips so that is most likely the failure point.
Personally, I like the chisel tips. So from your list, I like the STTC 036 for 600 degrees and the 136 for 700 degrees. I do use the 700 degree tips most often.
