Whick LCR-meter of eBay?
« on: October 02, 2013, 03:45:05 pm »
I need a LCR-meter and took a look en ebay - It must be in the EU, to avoid extra taxes. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=lcr+meter&LH_PrefLoc=3

Just need it for testing caps, nothing else - Any experience with some of them?

If you need it for testing caps avoid the  really cheap ones because they don't have ESR.

You are rather sparse on details. What frequencies do you want to test the caps at. What will be the caps used in? Do you need to test ESR? etc.

A rule of thumb though is that if it is under $50 its pretty much not worth your money.

Thanks for your replies.

Well the caps that will be testet is in regular comsumer-electronic, like monitors, amplifiers, etc. The primary reason for buying this thing is because i have two NAD-amplfiers in bridge-mode. One of them are lower on output, and alot more noisy. I think this could be a bad cap or two? Anyway, it is allways good with new tools :)

I really dont know much about caps and frequency. But i can manage to replace dead ones. Just need to confirm that they are bad.

No problem with 50-100 USD. I just don't wanna buy something that does not do the job.

Have a look at this review about the UNI-T UT612:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/review-and-tear-down-of-uni-t-ut612-lcr-meter/

In your list at 137 GBP.

The cheapest one in your list that I would consider is the Tonghui TH2822A at 95.00 GBP. Limited frequency range, but it should be sufficient to test electrolytic caps.

Are they class AB amps? Then it's unlikely a bad cap.

Thanks, and nice review. I did a search for LCR-meters, before posting this, but i did not find it.

It's a NAD 317 and a 214 if i remember correct. Some NAD's also have some speaker output relay fail.

They are class AB amps. No stressed caps in it. So it's unlikely a bad cap.

Tonghui is an excellent brand - many respected western manufacturers rebrand products from Tonghui.
Many respected western manufacturers? Can you list a few? I think BK Precision may rebadge a Tonghui LCR meter, but I'm not sure if I consider them respected. They mostly seem to rebadge mediocre to decent quality Chinese equipment with a huge mark-up these days.

Mike seemed reasonably happy with the Applent LCR meter in his review. Now that they stopped shipping the broken power supply, I think the Mastech MS5308 is a decent choice with good features (eg. real four-wire leads) and an acceptable quality (review 1, review 2).
