Best way to measure the strength of the magnets
« on: April 22, 2017, 03:11:06 am »
Hi, I bought some magnets from hardware stores. Is gaussmeter the best way to measure the strength of the magnets? Which product do you recommend?

And you can also get just basic magnetic field sensors without buying a piece of test equipment if you don't kind having a sensor instead of an instrument.

Can you recommend magnetic field sensors that could measure a wide range of strength please?

There are lots on eBay from china but as usual it's difficult to tell if they will work well. If your on bothered about making relative measurement between your magnets I think there are a number of pretty cheap Hall effect transistors easier available from RS Farnel etc that are easy to implement in a simple meter design.

You can also use an android phone or tablet with the relevant sensor and can even log the data. My 2 cents.

I would say that the "best way to measure the strength" depends on what you want to do with the magnets. If you want to lift something or hold something in place mechanically, the holding force will depend on the geometry of the magnet (and its counterpart) too. It would probably be best to actually measure the mechanical force instead of the field strength in that case.
