Why couldn't 'scopes autodetect for probes using their own 1kHz calibrators?

(1/1)

6SN7WGTB:
High(er) end 'scopes use fancy expensive and often proprietary BNC ends to allow autodetection of times X probes.

I hope this isn't a stupid question but, within reason, why could a scope not detect the times range of a probe if the user momentarily connected it to the calibration terminal?  The 'scope must know what amplitude the calibrator output is, so it can therefore detect the multiplier (divider...).

xrunner:
Could be done but it wouldn't gain much. You'd have to tell the scope when you were looking at the cal signal (instead of whatever else you were looking at) and then to adjust itself accordingly. So that would mean a menu selection. So same thing as going to a menu and telling the scope you want it to adjust reading for a 10X probe.
