With or without signal gen?
« on: November 06, 2013, 12:46:28 am »
I have narrowed my oscilloscope hunt down to the Rigol DS1074Z, but now, the question is to whether buy the arb gen for about $200 more, or save up for a DG1032/5062 or a Siglent SDG5082.
I'm not saying we should kill all stupid people. I'm just saying that we should remove all product safety labels and let natural selection do its work.

once you have a scope, you really want a signal gen.

however, not everyone needs an arb. do you really need an arb? = what do you plan to do?

I have a rigol dg2021 and I haven't used the arb function yet  :palm:
I probably could've survived with an old HP signal gen

I am watching a broken HP 3312A signal gen on eBay. 12MHz, needs repair, for about $75 or best offer. What do you think it's worth.

If you don't know enough to be able to fix it, then it's not worth anything.   :-BROKE

Another point to consider if you get a scope with a built-in signal gen is that's one less piece of gear on your bench.

For guys like myself and many other who end up jamming a small laboratory full of stuff into a corner of a garage or spare bedroom, bench top real estate really starts to get very valuable.

I don't NEED any arbitrary waveform generator, true, I could get by fine on an older HP or something but then I need to find a place to put it as well.

Scopes with signal gen built in can be very tempting for small space. I'd get on right now, if the signal gen on 1000Z-S series had a wider voltage range.

Bench space is not a problem. I have 2 Ikea tables in the attic.
