Title: Would Agilent 1165A work with Tektronix 2230 Oscilloscope ?
Post by: electronic_guy on March 02, 2024, 12:10:54 pm
Hi,

This question might seem odd. I need to know if Agilent 1165A would work with a Tektronix 2230 without any damage or problem to the 1165A. My Agilent infiniium scope repair went wrong and now I need a working scope, but I recklessly bought 1165A thinking the repair would succeed.  |O

If this doesn't work tell me some good scopes that would work with 1165A. I'm okay with either Agilent or Tektronix.

Thank you.

For what it's worth, my similar Agilent 10073D 500 MHz probe works perfectly well with my Tektronix 2230 scope.  The 10x auto-sense functions correctly.

I have mixed and matched Agilent/HP probes and scopes with Tektronix probes and scopes for decades.  Never had a problem except that with scopes that don't correctly sense the 10x probe attenuation, sometimes you have to do some mental arithmetic (divide by 10) when reading the scope's V/div setting.

There shouldn't be any way to damage the probe.  It's not like the scope is supplying a lot of voltage to the probe.

The probe will work fine with any 1 megohm oscilloscope input that is within its compensation range of 10 to 25 picofarads.  I do not see any way that it could be damaged.

I don't see any possible damage issues either, but the Agilent 1165A has an unusually narrow range for compensation of 12-14pF (maybe a misprint?).  Snippet from the 1160 Series User's Guide below.  The Tek 2230 is 20pF +/- 2pF.

You might have trouble adjusting the compensation.

Huh, when I searched for it I was directed here where it says 10 to 25 picofarads:

Try it anyway.  Often the probe compensation range is pessimistic.
