CAT S62 soon: new public Lepton spec?
« on: July 28, 2020, 09:35:30 am »
A few weeks ago, CAT their upcoming S62 "Pro" phone. From that short video I was really skeptical: it looked like yet another Lepton based camera with all the issues: bad MSX alignment, nothing in focus, low framerate. However they still called out next gen thermal over and over again.

So yesterday they put up another notice, confirming a Lepton and what It looks like the usual FLIR One app. As far as I know, the S61 used a 160x120 lepton module with two gain modes - but there are conflicting reports. As FLIR themselves said it was the 80x60 kind and the MSX is high resolution.

We know that there are multiple public Lepton specs, but all of them are "slow video". There is a 30hz version of the Lepton but that was never available to the public. Torrey Pines Logic used to sell rifle sights that operate at 30hz for the 80x60 version. FLIR has a 160x120 Lepton that certainly not runs at 8hz for it's Black Hornet drone as well.

As the full specs will be announced later today, I want to see what the answer is. It could likely just be another case of using higher reresolution visible images for MSX, but some of the shots shown in the video looks really good, while others did not.

website didn't tell the specs when I wrote this, also found some press releases already. Seems to be an overall downgrade from the S61 (camera, battery, connectivity, features). I will test the ergonomics once I find it on a shelf somewhere before I decide to upgrade or go elsewhere.

If they claim it's a better camera, than that means the S61 was just a 80x60 model?
