Hypothetically how difficult would it be to mount something like this on a drone?

or maybe

biggest issue is finding the right point to mount it without affecting the drones balance

Mounting = Easy

Data handling and communications air to ground = not easy

Thanks, that's the bit I figured was going to be a challenge.

Most existing thermal imaging drone set ups are big expensive and require a license, insurance etc, mounting something like this on say a Mavic mini 2 would have some commercial potential if it could be sneaked inside the 250g limit

It would certainly be interesting for a drone to have a USB-C camera connector and stream whatever it was fed.
Not easy, not hard, just need to be incentivised.

One of these could be simply strapped on and already has bluetooth comms but at 153g is probably a bit too heavy and bluetooth range may be an issue

Pi zero + any phone thermal imager with usb, that usually registers itself as a webcam.
just process the raw / monochrome video in opencv to your liking and output it over the tv header in analog composite / fbas into a fpv / ocusync transmitter.

You really do not need to worry about a drone's balance (if you mean the type driven by multiple horizontal rotors, at least), as the flight controller automatically compensates for imperfect weight distribution, as long as it's not pushed to extremes of course.

You should define your drone definition. U need a unit whos can lift enought and battery can live enought. Cheap ones cannot do that.

I think some drones do have a USB port specifically for attaching various gadgets, although whether or not it'd be able to meaningfully use a thermal camera, I don't know.

I was really just looking for a cost effective method of getting a thermal drone, you can just buy one but the price is a bit hefty @£4800 ish whereas a post lockdown almost new hardly used Mavic 2 mini can be had for £200-300 on FB marketplace
