Title: Flir E5 no hack - any good for PCB inspection?
Post by: zserg on March 12, 2020, 07:36:06 pm
Hi all!

I have potentially a rather good deal for Flir E5 & I've been looking for a thermal camera to use for PCB inspection for quite a while.
It's hard to figure out the serial & I know that units after 2017 are not really hackable.

So the question is - are there any folks around using E5 with standard firmware/no hack? Would it be good enough (with MSX and extra short-focus lens) for PCB inspection?

Cheers!

For PCB inspection more than enough. Can you try it before buying (in case you are not buying online of course)? There is also a bunch of youtube videos of people doing pretty much everything with them including looking at PCBs. Good luck...

Hey. I recently made a macro lens holder for the E6. A man uses to troubleshoot electronic circuit boards. The thermal imager is not hacked.

Wow, that looks really nice! Much more solid than the stuff from Thingiverse.
3D printing, then epoxy plaster and painting? How is it mounted?
I see paper clip springs(nice!) and some thumb screws...

Yup, that's sort of reply I was looking for, thanks. No chance to try unfortunately - buying online as you've guessed.

You can see the holder device here https://youtu.be/6_EUN7DSm9Y.  I used both plastic and metal in the holder. Lenses are mounted in metal bushings. Duralumin bushings with anodizing.

Post 938 in the E4 WiFi hack thread may be of interest to you. The recent E5 models can be upgraded........

“I can report that I was able to liberate my E5 2.0 with 3.16.0.  I used the files at: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/thermal-imaging/flir-e4-wifi-resolution-and-menu-hack-thread/msg1397359/#msg1397359 (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/thermal-imaging/flir-e4-wifi-resolution-and-menu-hack-thread/msg1397359/#msg1397359) The instructions are in the read me files.   Post 788 has the file for the updated common_dll 3.16 instead of the one in the pack.  The hardest part was using python in step 7.  It was all about getting the correct directory selected to run python and generate the new conf.cfc.  I did not find in necessary to edit the config.cfg file to change E4 to E5.
Thanks and KUDOS to Bud and all the other contributors.”
