Flir hack
« on: September 24, 2022, 10:17:31 am »
Hello,

I have this camera with some weird symptoms.
When I boot up the camera, image is cristal clear and temperature readings are acurate.
After 3 minutes, in the bottom rigth corner, some purpule stripes start to be visible in the screen, after some more time they get really visible. Within this time, temperature scale is also going up in small increments. If I boot the E5, facing my hand temp is 37º degrees, after 5 minutes this temp is going up slowlly to about 50º, and I am still pointing to my hand.

Could this be fixeble.... or is it hardware related?

I see that this camera could be upgraded, is this correct?

Best regards
Nezocas

Do you hear shutter working? Does image pause periodically?

Is that part of the screen getting hotter? Could be that the screen is getting heated from behind by a failed part.

Hello,
E5 was very dirty inside and outside. This was bougth at eBay.
I dissassembled it and was fully cleaned (defect was allready there). This camera Will help me in my every day electronics repair... I also do BGA repair.
Didnt see any PCB component that had suffered from critical heat to the point of causing LCD malfunction.
This camera was previouslly opened.... And I tought that those strippes were fingerprint left on the sensor, but I check every thing under the microscope and no fingerprint left on the sensor or the camera lents.

I don't think this has anything to do with LCD, rather sensor unevenly heating up and camera not calibrating it out.

Observe the shutter flag operation.

If it's the bottom left corner, the top right corner of the sensor might not get cleared fully.

Ok will dismantle it again... place all components in a way that I am able to see the shutter working visually, and report back.
Some times when the camera boots up, I get a fully green screen with a barelly visible image mixed within the green, temperature reading is at max value.
Other times when booting I get a screen with only gray squares. But after pressing the power button, and removing the baterry .... she boots normally.

The shutter works ok, it opens and closes totally.

Hello again,

Been reading this forum and found something interesting, in this post we can see photos of an older model, no wifi (just like mine) and the new 2017 upwards model.
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/thermal-imaging/flir-e4-wifi-resolution-and-menu-hack-thread/50/

If all is correct, mine has got that gray glued square, but aparrentlly that "filter" is only in the newer ones.... my "filter" is not centerd with the hole of the aluminium.
I will try to remove it and do some more testing without it.

Hi,

Problem solved.
It was a tinny smd capacitor, near the lcd connector, that was cracked.
Image now is cristal clear and also temperature readings are correct.
