Integration of android thermal camera in UAV
« on: March 03, 2017, 10:11:42 am »
Hello,
I do not know if it has been discussed in the forum before, if so, I apologize.

I would like to know if it is possible to integrate a thermal camera android (Thermal Expert or Therm-App) into a UAV type DJI Phanton 4 or similar and to be able to see the thermal images in streaming. Is there a tool available for this?

Thank you for your answers,
Marcos

Many thermal imaging modules will have a standard video output that you can feed into the transmitter of your choice.

Thanks nidlaX,
I know other systems of transmission of thermal images from UAV, but the interest is in the possibility of using android cameras, therm app or thermal expert, for this purpose.
One way is with the installation the camera connected to a auxiliary smartphone in the UAV, and transmit the images through network 3G / 4G. This requires good coverage and a SIM card consuming data on an auxiliary smartphone.
I wonder if there is any way to make the output of these cameras analog and transmit them through FVP, or some other method that allows to use these cameras to see in real time the thermal images from the UAV.
Thanks

I don't see the point in using a phone to produce analogue thermal video.  Just use an analogue out camera.
An intermediate device like a Raspberry Pi might be able to do it ?  Do not forget that most of the picture processing is in the phone, not in the camera.

It should be possible to send the uncorrected sensor data to a phone at the receive end - somehow - which means the phone does not have to fly.

Now as for streaming the thermal video over 3G, sounds feasible as you are replacing the visual camera feed with the thermal one.
That is 'only' software  :-DD :-DD

I see. Like Bill W, I think the easiest way to do this would be to use a small SBC like the Raspberry Pi Zero W in conjunction with the various protocol reverse engineering we have available on this forum to perform the task. The DJI Lightbridge series, for example, can accept HDMI input on the transmitter. You could use an Android SBC with the native Therm-App application to transmit the application video directly.
