Is the stray capacitor on the foam adhesive an addition after it was opened or was it just floating around in there?  :-DD

I was having the same question when I first saw it.
After some looking on the board, I found the missing position: C21, just look at the board photo.

The OP doesn't say how (or in what way) the device died. I had a quick squint at the data sheet for the Rockchip RH816-2 (multiple power rail switcher & regulator & supervisor & charger & ...) and wondered whether that capacitor is crucial to its correct functioning. I couldn't see the PCB tracks quite clearly enough to be sure.

Duff power rails usually mean duff device...

The capacitor was fallen off after the device failed, not because of that.
