Title: Ultra hi-res ROICs and thermal cameras
Post by: Ultrapurple on October 12, 2017, 01:31:23 pm
I was surprised to discover that FLIR offer ROICs of up to 2k x 2k pixel resolution (the ISC1404). It's quoted as being suitable for InSb and SLS sensors, meaning it would be usable at MWIR or LWIR. Information is somewhat sparse, and none of us are likely to have the facilities at home to build a sensor to attach to it.

Moving over to actual cameras you can buy (with enough cash, and the appropriate export paperwork) I was impressed by the uncooled T1030sc at 1024 x 768 LWIR, <20mK. If you want higher resolution there's the 1280 x 1024 X8500 series for MWIR or LWIR (7.5-10.5µm), <40mK. I know I'm starting to sound like a FLIR advertising brochure but I think these are seriously impressive. And probably seriously expensive.

The fact that this information is on public display makes me wonder what other toys are lurking in the shadows...

Has anyone else come across any publicly-available information on very high resolution cameras or cores from other manufacturers? The only one that springs to my mind is Ulis' Pico1024, at 1024x768.

Whilst there is no associated radiometric options for this camera (yet!), this is the highest resolution core I've come across: The Sierra Olympic Vayu HD (https://www.sierraolympic.com/products/lwir-optics/vayu-thermal/vayu-hd (https://www.sierraolympic.com/products/lwir-optics/vayu-thermal/vayu-hd)). It is 1920x1200!

Their explanation on thermal cameras is a nice read: https://www.sierraolympic.com/technology/how-it-works (https://www.sierraolympic.com/technology/how-it-works)

I've watched the sample footage of the Viento HD, I wonder how the Vayu compares. Are they using a DRS sensor?

Also, Sierra Olympic is a fantastic company. They are 100% willing to help you even if you are an end user with no previous sales relationship with them. Their outlet pricing is also extremely good when available. I wouldn't touch DRS products with a 10 foot pole without the backing of Sierra Olympic as a distributor.

The highest resolution thermal camera I know of, not necessarily LWIR, is the ImageIR 10300 from InfraTec.
1920x1536 resolution, <30mK, cooled InSb sensor at 100 frames per second, 3-5um MWIR.

I suspect they're using the BLACKBIRD 1920 sensor from SCD.

There's 1280 x 1024 in 3-5µm InSB as well as 1024 x 768 in 8-14µm VOx from  from SCD in Israel.

In their cooled range there is a 1920 x 1536 InSB

which could be the detector behind the image above.
