Some noob questions Flir one Pro or Seek Pro
« on: January 23, 2019, 07:23:24 pm »
Hi,

as many others im looking for an affordable thermal imager, in my case, Android.

I tried to get into this on my own, but im lost.

What do I want to do?
Looking for thermal bridges in building (every budget camera should be fine for this)
but also for
- Find errors on PCB (lets say Raspberry Pi sized PCB (nowadays all is measured in multiples of Raspberrys, smallest parts usually 0603)
- Record temperature rise of components, heat sinks, cases
- Connect it to a PC while the thermal imager is on a tripod

Seek Thermal Pro
- manual Focus, better suited for PCB
- alot of people use this one with a lens
- Not a real good resolution/picture quality
- Uses in build battery of the phone, so maybe better suited for "outside" use

Flir One Pro
- less resolution. With MSX it just seems better than it is. Parallax problems while doing PCB work. MSX seems to be overrated

I3 TE-M1
- less resolution than the Seek, a bit pricy

But.. What about the Software. Sometimes i can use a "big" Flir at my company. What i like is to build a graph over time of multiples points, is Thermovision_JoeC Software able to do this (yes, now i found some pictures where this is shown. But does this also work on budget cams)?

Can i use Flir Tools (PC) for postprocessing (dont even know if this is free Software. Its hard to find information on their website). On work we use something called Reporter which isnt free.
- If Flir Tools are free, i could "record" a movie and do post later on Win or whatever - is this correct?

Am i right:
- Free software, like Thermovision_JoeC, needs always a Calibration on startup. Flir or Seek, both the same in this respect?
-> so Free software is not for a fast first look?

Flir One Pro, Seek Thermal Pro or I3 TE-M1

Sorry for these basic questions, but i found alot of pcb pictures of these cameras. But not alot information whats possible with the software.

Regards
Malte

MSX is nice to have on low resolution thermal cameras (30x30, 60x60 and 120x120) but with higher resolution there is no need for it, so its only overrated on the better models - for a Flir One non-pro it is nice to have.

Anway - without being an expert on the "Thermal", my vote is for the I3  if you can afford it, or else the Seek just for the manual focus.
The technology behind the I3 lens and detector is supposedly way better.

I asked myself the same questions a few months ago ... Finally I took a flir one generation 2 (less than 200 € reconditioned on amazon). I do not regret it, it is largely sufficient for many uses (including to see a short circuit on an electronic circuit. See report joint)

FLIR has less noise, butt the Seek has a higher resolution (and higher frame rate if you live in the US), and can thus see more detail. Personally, resolution and frame rate are more important to me than reducing noise. So yeah. I would definitely get the Seek Compact Pro. In fact I already have one, and am very pleased with it.
