and IF it's only software-limited, does the E4 to E8 hack also unlock the E8's sensitivity?  ???

(surprisingly that question hasn't been asked before here or elsewhere)

it is answered in the giant thread on the hack.

All E4-E8 are electrically identical 320x240 pixel Tau series cores with what you could call an ini file to define performance, which includes the resolution reduction and noise addition functions to make an E4 from an E8.

It has been discussed and answered.

The sensitivity of the Ex and a Exx series is modified by FLIR using artificial noise injection. The level of false noise is set in mK in the configuration. The E4 upgrade switches off the artificial noise generator. This was discussed in the massive E4 teardown thread so is easily missed.

Why use an artificial noise generator ? It enabled FLIR to make one camera more sensitive than another using identical hardware. Control over resolution and sensitivity is a great marketing tool when creating a line-up of cameras using identical hardware, but at different price points, as you can imagine.

ok thx for the info I didnt know about the artificial noise thing

so in other words they're actively sabotaging their low end models wtf...

btw if I have an old e4 with 2.3.0 firmware & use Fubar's hack (the only proven reliable hack from what I gather, and only works on 2.3.0 firmware) does his hack also remove the artificial noise?

What is "unreliable" with the mainstream hacks? Afaik Fubar did great job however it was merely compiling existing information into a user friendly procedure. He did not develop no "hack" per se. His web site has gone BTW last time i checked.

You are "holding it wrong".  They are diversifying their products offering  :)
