The amount of clueless idiots in this hobby made me believe in gatekeeping.

I wouldn't quite be so unkind to call him a "clueless idot"; he's not necessarily an experienced electronics engineer, but the guy's no fool - he's exceptionally clever and is more a programmer and a digital realm bloke. He's written games and sold them, and... well just dig a little through his channel and hopefully you'll come to see he's not what you might have written him off as.

All I'd say is that he's wasted a week chasing his tail, but haven't we all at some point? :)

Unfortunately, he is not totally clueless.

The 4-bit guy is just that. Half-knowledgeable.
And for once, the cliché is right: "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing".

He’s not the worst out there but sometimes gets my teeth grinding.

That dremel attach made me angry though.

I'm surprised he didn't have a set of  "safety bit" drivers handy. They aren't all that rare.

Yep. If you’re in the retro repair business they are essential.

So one has to be an "experienced electronics engineer" in order not to short line and neutral on a PSU (how's that for "exceptionally clever"?) and to remove safety hex screws without butchering a rare, possibly prototype, and therefore of historical value, piece of equipment? I wasn't aware of that. ::)
Knowing when you're in over your head is a good skill to have in any case.

I'm well familiar with his channel. I've just unsubscribed from it. He's always struck me, as newbrain put it, "half-knowledgeable", but this time he went above and beyond that.

Of course we have. Normally not due to gross negligence, though, least of all in a rare piece of equipment that doesn't belong to me.

Overall he didn't seem to care in the least. He started out the video by whining about how the place is on the other side of town and how he had to drive for an hour to get there. Well boo-hoo. Other people in the hobby would travel a long distance to go check that place out if they had the chance, like Clint from LGR did. Couldn't be arsed to even load the box in his car. Then he handled it like it was a sack of dung (see the way he turns it on its side at 3:00). From then on it's a dumpster fire. If he doesn't care for what brings him views and revenue, then why even do it? If he didn't want to deal with the stuff the volunteers at Computer Reset found, then he could have just refused instead of being negligent. Of course, then he wouldn't have got those all-important views that YouGoobers are all about.

I also thought he was very careless with the machine, contrary to the other videos I saw of him (not many, I must admit). There was a lot that could be investigated before jumping the power supply and blewing it up, among a few other things.

Oh, well... He has access to these guys and a very popular channel, thus he gets dibs to these.

Found the problem:

The CPU is an Intel 8086.

So obviously we can't expect better than a half-assed attempt from "8 Bit Guy" on this 16 bit computer.  :P

He doesn't "just make videos". He's a marketer selling a product (engagement) and he's got a set of loyal followers who think this is normal behaviour, which it's not. This is how we end up with the world going down the toilet: a thousand idiots just making a thousand video each with 100,000 followers...

He may be good at programming, but his electronics skills suck, as he's shown in video after video. He had no place fucking around with rare gear.

I never got this obsessive commentary people feel they HAVE to give on other people's possessions - if he wants to mess up some random old crappy PC, good for him. Life's too short to care about what he's doing.

Maybe it's to do with being envious that others (the condemners) don't or didn't have the access he got, to said machine? Oh well.

1. it wasn't his;
2. it wasn't "some random old crappy PC", it was a rare, possibly prototype machine. You may not care about such things, but other people do;
3. I, myself, would have been completely okay had anyone else got access to that machine, as long as they did a proper job of handling it.

The video is not enjoyable to watch. It sucks.

He had access to, not one, but several, new-in-box, rare, very old PCs. He plugged in the first one and it didn't work properly. After mangling the first one, he then proceeded to open all of the remaining boxes and plug them all in, one by one, until they were all broken. He was basically a destructive idiot.

That's precisely it. I have no problem with other people getting access to stuff I cannot; such is life. I normally enjoy watching videos of old hardware. That way I can learn about stuff I couldn't dream of getting my hands on, but which I find interesting nonetheless.

Nothing useful was presented in that video; rather the opposite.

I watched this yesterday and as he was doing it, some obvious signs such as the AC cable colour code made me think that this was a very bad idea.

I reckon as he threw that switch, he immediately realised that he did something stupid.

This isn't the first time he's used a paperclip in this way. Something blew up the last time as well, you'd think he learned a lesson from that.
