For competition reasons I'm really hopeful, but given how far behind AMD is I'm not too optimistic.

Going to be two generations behind Intel at best.

Intel needs to get socked in the face so we don't have to suffer the ridiculous pricing for HEDT.

When AMD were on top, their processors were selling for 4 digits (Socket 940 885 for $2149) in the mid 2000s.

To think AMD wouldn't gouge where possible is naive. Even if Zen competes with Broadwell-E, Intel could skip Skylake-E and go straight for Kaby Lake-E (although there's hardly any real difference).

That would be awesome. The increase in IPC from Intel the last two gens has been limited; so two generations behind would allow AMD to put up a fight for all but the most high-end models.

I'd sign for that.

Well, they made a big thing of how their CPU is comparable in performance to an i7-6900K for less power.

But they never addressed pricing.

And I translate their statement that they chose desktop PCs as their first release because 'they love gaming' into choosing desktop PCs because they can get away without working ECC or any serious validation..

I'd take the benchmarks and release dates from AMD with a large chunk of salt anyway. When there are plenty of independents and users with then in hand then I'd be more interested. AMD focused gamers because they have plenty of hard-core consumers on their GPU side who are wanting a change.

If AMD competes with Intel well, not just on their CPUs but on the entire platform then they will win back a lot of consumers. Thunderbolt, multiple M.2, and plenty of PCI-E lanes and USB 3.1 is basically what I'm talking about. Yes Thunderbolt is Intel so are likely to miss out on that.

I've been pretty nonchalant about all this until because AMD paper launches products and was burnt by Bulldozer and Piledriver...
