SVN update missing, anyone else?
« on: October 08, 2024, 08:36:12 am »
Hi all,

I opened a ticket over on the Altium site under our company dashboard over a month ago, but only their robot replies, hopefully real humans do better...
A couple of updates ago (I'm now at 24.9.1) the SVN update vanished and we use SVN for library and project revision control. The Commit function is still there when I right click a library file I've changed, just no update when a colleague has committed his changes. I managed to stop him updating so he's stuck in the past but I now have to drop out to a Windows Explorer and us its SVN plug in to update files. Has anyone else seen this?

Is it only the colleague that has the issue, or everyone has the same problem? If everyone has the same problem then revert back to whatever version did not have the issue.

I don't see the issue 24.9.1, but I only have a git project open right now so not directly comparable.

I know that Altium is planning to drop SVN support in favor of Git, but have not been able to get a final date for this.
I can say that we have not seen too many SVN repo related issues with last release for AD23 (23.11.1). So I would:
  • Try doing a clean install of AD 24.9.1 and see if the bug is still there
  • If above does not help then try replicating bug on AD 23.11.1

Thanks for the replies

At the moment there are 2 Altium users here, I should have mentioned we're not using 365. I updated a couple of times in the past months and have am missing SVN update, my colleague stayed on an old release and still has it. I'm running Altium on both an office desktop and my laptop, both up to date (24.9.1), both now missing SVN update, so it's definitely one of their updates, I'll re-install on the laptop later.

I took a look at GIT, I see on my desktop there's a GIT repo (365), oddly though under Data Management "Create New" and "Connect To" only have a SVN option. We design for numerous customers each with their own SVN repo to avoid data cross contamination so ease of use is important, I'd rather not switch until there's a good level of support / integration and it's mature. When I get a free morning / afternoon I'll look some more.

Has anybody yet verified at what version they had SVN update disappear?
I have not updated to the latest and it seems that I won't be doing that either.

My Altium ticket got a reply today (perhaps they watch this forum), it's a known problem
"60805 'History & Version Control' right-click context menu (Projects panel) updated with minor terminology changes and comparison commands in context with the document under the cursor when accessed. I also see that the file level update is missing after the change. Reinstalling does not fix this. I will forward this to our development team. I now see no other option than to update the libraries referenced in the project using an external tool such as Tortoise."
I have TortoiseSVN installed and that puts an "Update" function into Windows File Explorer, not that painful so I'll stick with this until it's fixed (if).

For anyone finding this thread, SVN did eventually sort of come back, but with issues.
I frequently work away from the office so checking in and out is important and currently "Update", i.e. grabbing the latest from the SVN repo is a bit hit and miss. For example Altium currently shows a schematic sheet as out of date, when I try to update it, Altium pops up a window where sometimes there's a little tick-box clicking to to (why), but often it's blank and you get the error "None of the targets are working copies.

The only fixes are either delete the local project and check it all out again or try TortoiseSVN. It's not a showstopper just annoying.
I'll raise this with them and see if there's any response.

I use third party software for SNV, not altium. I want to have more files under version control without adding them to altium. TortoiseSVN.
And I think the button is there: update project from server. Probably they realized that updating individual files break their software.

Another vote for TortoiseSVN here. And TortoiseGIT if you're that way inclined.

Not unique to Altium, BTW. I have several IDEs or apps that will do svn, but I don't let any of them actually do it - always Tortoise. That way I am in control and not dependent on someone elses idea of what I want to do. Having said that, it's nice that Altium can show you svn status.
