12v interupt
« on: October 05, 2014, 05:32:35 am »
Hi Guys
I am sure you will be able to help with the following.
I recently fitted a new flip front head unit to my car which is great except for the following problem.
When starting car (key turn between ACC and START) there is a split second power supply interupt to
stereo which makes the unit reset eg. fold in then fold out Really annoying. Is there anything i can put
in the acc lead to prevent this
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
VIC

This is likely caused by voltage sag on the 12v system. Starting a car can make it drop down as low as 3v. You can try to add a filter inductor in series with the positive line into the radio and a big capacitor after that from positive to ground. Even that may not help though. Good luck!

That should solve your issue, but it hints are other problems with your car (assuming the radio is stock)
 - Your battery is not behaving correcty.  Eg too old or not big enough for your car
 - Your starter motor might not be healthy
 - Your engine might have a larger than normal mechanical resistance to startup

Hope it goes well :)

It's probably easier to source large diodes than large inductors.
