I am having failures on a Bi-Directional DC Contactors used for High Voltage Battery systems for Energy storage.
We use a Charge and Discharge contactor. 99% of the failure occurs on the charge contactor.
Using a YM EVHB500-A-24 with a 24V Coil and built in economizer, Powered with a Meanwell WDR240-24 power supply through the BMS.
Continually get adhesion faults where the charge contactor will engage but not stay latched. During initial installation this contactor opens and closes while the lithium cells balance.
After teardown analysis, we found a mosfet on the economizer board is frying. This would occur if it sees 100V or more. Oddly, we can keep the contactor latched if we power it with a voltage higher than 24, around 48VDC but only after the initial failure.
Question, shouldn't the built in economizer take care of the inductive voltages being generated when the magnetic field is closed? I understand diodes should be placed in parallel to the coil voltage but are they required when you have the economizer circuit?
What else could cause a voltage spike into the economizer circuit?
