Except by doing physical projects, how can I make learning digital electronics fun?

I'm studying for some competitive examination after graduating with computer engineering. The problem is I am already on a job unrelated to electronics and I find it very boring to learn this stuff again as everything is just feeling repeated and rehashed. I am not learning anything new. It's like revising.

How do I make this a bit more interesting? I really don't have time for physical breadboard projects. Are there any time less things that I can do to make this learning interesting, it necessarily doesn't have to some project only. Any challenging exercises that can tease my brain can also help me.

I am not learning anything new. It's like revising.

If  you already know it all, then why keep repeating?  Just stop and move on to a job doing what you like.  In the alternative (i.e,. no jobs available) learn a new, marketable skill.

Unfortunately I don't think you can. Projects are the whole point of it, only by applying it do you have fun, or even learn it properly.

If you can't get hold of the parts you need immediately you could try using a simulator to prototype some circuit concepts until you can get the parts and any test equipment you need. For digital electronics a simulator might be rather closer to practicality that in more analogue domains where real world imperections (your wires have inductance, your capacitors don't behave the same at all voltages...) are more important.

Design and build a humidity gauge. You just need the sensor, 5VDC, ADC, and LCD display. Part of the ADC is an mcu to convert the voltage output from the sensor. You can power it with a cell phone backup brick..

Make some projects with CPLDs or FPGAs.

E.g. using one of these boards:

If you are into software you can make a simulator for logic boards.

Simulators. Plenty of different stuff out there, from Arduino like things up till Spice.
When it fits, stop using the hammer

Analog computing!

This schematic is for MATLAB Simulink but the ideas are the same for other schemes.  The 1/s blocks are simple integrators with initial conditions as appropriate.  1 ufd and 1Mohm work well for low speed solutions.

The big idea is to get rid of differential terms by integration.

Hi,

You can delve more into theory.  For example, learn Boolean Logic.  We don't know what you have already studied however maybe you covered that already.  Then, look into Automated Reasoning.

And VHDL must be very high density...  HDL is good for you.  What about VHDL?
