And why do so many usb 3.0 hubs seem to only supply .5A per port despite coming with a 50-70w power supply?  Many of these hubs claim to be able to handle 4-6A at 12v.  USB power management is such a mystery...

Perhaps you can provide links to some products or the chips within?
Do you want use the hub as an off-line multi-port charger? ..perhaps while the USB host is unavailable to enumerate a power budget?

Maybe this is what you're looking for: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-usb-hubs/
(The article is just a few weeks old, and gives a good look at current "state of the art" 3.0 hub-chargers).

This one below is 45usd and offers 3.1 amps of charge across 2 ports plus 7 more with host connectivity... looks nice :-+

Just looking to use as a hub for many power hungry devices such as optical drives and bus powered external hard drives.  No need for dedicated charging ports, I have plenty of Anker and apple usb wall chargers for that purpose.

Yes, I've seen that hub but it's unclear how much current each port can provide in the hub (not the charge only ports)
