How to post LaTex formulae here?

I'm having no luck posting LaTex formulas here.
I've formatted a formula using MathJax (using their "sandbox") which renders correctly in the sandbox, but I can't get it to render here at all.

So I went through a bunch of posts here that contain LaTex. Copied the formulas note-for-note into my message; none of them render correctly.

For example, from this post, I pulled out this LaTex that renders correctly there (it's the first on in the post):

\$V_f = \frac{V_s Z_0}{Z_0 + Z_s}\$

But obviously it doesn't work here.

I really don't want to resort to converting LaTex to images and posting the images. None of the posts I looked at do that.

I've tried using [math], [lax] and [latex] tags, but the parser doesn't seem to understand them at all, as you can see here.

What am I doing wrong?
And why is there nothing in the help docs here that explains this?

It would be better for me if I could post equations directly in Unicode from the Word equation editor, but I'm curious about LaTex.

Looks like that might be the answer: you have to wait a minute?
When I posted that message, the preview didn't show the rendered formula.
But now I can see that the LaTex did actually render correctly in the post.
And I thought the posted message also didn't. But maybe it did? I actually didn't check.
So it looks as if the posted message will render correctly, but not the preview.
If that's true, then that sorta sucks. (Looking at you, SMF.)
In that case you have to post the message, then look at it, then edit it if you screwed up the LaTex.

I have found that several features, such as italics, can stay in the original format in preview, but post properly.

No, that was my point: it doesn't render at all in preview, but renders correctly in the posted post.

Lots of stuff does not work in message preview mode, including inline images.  I assume simplemachine's plugin architecture treats preview rendering differently to final post rendering.
