How to preserve tin paste?
« on: February 07, 2021, 03:43:39 pm »
About two months ago I did a job with paste tin, this was new, today I am going to use it and it is hard, it was well covered and in a cool place, does anyone know what it is revived with, with alcohol?

Make it warm and add some gel flux, like RMA223 or NC559.

For the next time, i would rather recommend you to buy paste in a syringe.

Glycerine may also work well, except that it needs to be cleaned.
It is great surface tension modifier for solder. I use it for tinning tracks on self made PCBs.

Flux and solder in room temperature may separate and left/leak on syringe internal walls, therefore solder paste will bee too thick to get it out easy

Skip the low temp ones (SnBi/SnBiAg) from ChipQuik, their flux formula is garbage and won't activate before alloy melting.
For what it’s worth, I’ve had no trouble with the low-temp ChipQuik — at least not with fresh components and PCBs. I haven’t tested it with older, more oxidized parts.

Ah ok! I’ve tried their regular low-temp, and no-fridge regular temp, but not the combination!

If you can get butanol (the 4-carbon alcohol) it is a low vapor-pressure solvent that seems to be the magic ingredient in many pastes.
I managed to get a bottle of it, and add just a few drops to the paste any time it seems too stiff.  Then, you have to stir it in real well.
