HP 3582a Spectrum Analyzer trigger problems

Hello everybody,
I just purchased a HP3582a and I’m having problems with the triggering. The repetitive button will not stay in unless I hold in and when I turn the level dial to the middle position and push the arm button nothing happens unless I nudge the level dial a little. All of the controls are in the start position and I tried playing with the internal/external switch in the back of the unit. This is my first Spectrum Analyzer and don’t know if I’m missing something or this thing is defective. Any and all advice would greatly appreciated!!!
