Name that component!?
« on: March 25, 2022, 10:00:00 pm »
Hi there

Can anyone provide some guidance on what this component is and/or who makes it?

https://imgur.com/a/WYbK8r8

It's from a Motorola TLKR T60 walkie talkie - and it's released it's magic smoke...and now no longer so much as powers on.  It appears to be marked S2NI (it's twin walkie talkie that does work is marked S2NH).

Full disclosure - I tried hooking this up to dedicated smart nicad charger - and the charger complained and followed with a tiny release of smoke.  So perhaps it's a voltage regulator?

The logo for the component manufacturer appears to be a moon, or a kiwi, or a monochrome rainbow or something - but I've not had any success tracking it down that way either.  Unable to find a datasheet with the S2N, S2NI, or S2NH.  Perhaps the final character is a date stamp or something?

Help or pointers appreciated.

Clayton.

My hunch was that S2 is the marking and the last two digits the date code. A quick search for “s2 sot325” turned up this page https://www.s-manuals.com/smd/s2 , of which the following item looks very promising, given that marking and date code format, pin count, and nearby silk screen all agree: https://www.s-manuals.com/pdf/datasheet/l/a/la9010_r01_inno.pdf

A 4.2V lion charger, in a product that uses NiMH batteries? The company logo isn't even close either. :palm:

No, what you have is an ME6211C33M5G. Search for images of this part and you'll see the match.

This is the second time within this week I've seen that logo...

I don’t know anything about the battery type in the walkie. I simply proposed a candidate (my exact word being “promising”). It’s certainly not unreasonable to think it could be a charger IC when one of the nearby pads on the board is BAT-.

It’d still be incumbent on the OP to verify circuit design, etc., and in this case, the contradictory battery chemistries would throw up a red flag. That’s the OP’s job, not mine, so don’t lash out at me!

The company logo isn't even close either. :palm:
It’s not a facepalm for the logo to not match. Companies can (and do) change their logos over time, you know! Or a company gets bought out, or sells a product line… many reasons other than facepalm-worthy stupidity for a logo to not match.

I agree, it looks like a more likely candidate for what the OP (not me!) has, based on images. (The datasheet, on the other hand, doesn’t describe marking them with “S2”.)

Well aren’t you special!  ::)

Look it's a bit of a challenge trying to track this down, and it's really helpful for me to go through the thought process you both have of trying to find out what the heck it is.

...I have been dreading needing a covid impossible to source component...which this might be....but it looks like the esp8266 has one of them on it.  I'm sure I have one of those I can sacrifice!  🙂👍

Why destroy something that presumably is working?  It's a 3.3V  fixed voltage LDO regulator with an enable pin.  There are a fair number of similar devices.  The MC5205 is just one such device.

NB: The connection to pin4 is optional.

Fair call!  I'll see what I'm able to track down locally.  :)

Huh? They’re readily available on AliExpress, etc.
