Soldering SMD electrolytic caps
« on: July 09, 2011, 09:21:27 am »
And advice on how to hand solder SMD electrolytic caps to a PCB?

They kinda tough as the terminals are under the device.
There's the (plastic?) insulator as well which I don't want to melt with my iron.

If I had some junk PCBs and parts I could use trial and error and practice but I have 2 caps and 1 PCB and I'd rather not make a mess of it.

Maybe Dave could show us how in his next soldering tutorial on SMD stuff.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Found this.. more about removing old ones but good info.

The suggestion is to use solder paste, I can see how this would make it easier.

I can't say I've had a problem before.

I just load the pads with solder hold the capacitor to the board and use a fine tipped iron to melt the solder.

On large packages where the exposed terminal on each side is much smaller in area than the pad under the device it is important to use thermal relief on the pads if you plen on using a standard iron to solder them, or you can preheat the board.
