Linear Systems makes several very sexy discontinued JFETs, including the J170. They call theirs the LSK170.
I order them direct, or the DiyAudio store may have them.

Hello friends,

I finally had some time to build the circuit for this phono preamp. Here is how I built it. It is home brew style.

And here, once again, is the schematic.

It can take 18 to 24 VDC and I am running it at 18V.

I am not getting as much gain as I had hoped. It works, but at a slightly lower volume than expected.

So, if I increase the voltage to 24V, would I get more volume out of it?

Thanks
