Dave, I also donate heaps of gear that I get from working with an estate company. I make sure that HD's are re-formatted after I've collected up any photos and files that the family might want/need. Sometimes there is no family and I just wipe everything to keep it out of the hands of bad people. I encourage others with the knowledge to work on computers and other electronics to do the same thing. There are a couple of local churches that always know which kids/families need computers/monitors/etc since it can be horribly difficult to work with schools. I've also set up the local library with printers as they brought in inkjets at one point an then didn't have the budget to keep replacing the cartridges. Now they have several laser printers so kids can print out their homework.
To see all of the still useful computers going to the scrappers is an outrage. Other electronics as well. My whole lab has been purchased/acquired second hand. It's not as extensive or vintage as Mr Carlson's, but I get by (chuckle).
The Intel NUC works well on Linux Mint. I won't install Chrome on any of my main computers so I used a miniPC with Mint to run Chrome for testing and two online apps I use from time to time. It's quite peppy and sits out of the way.
