It's because they used center negative.

They are, to borrow from Mr Adams, a bunch of mindless jerks who will be first against the wall when the revolution comes.

All Brother P-touch labellers are just as evil, 9V 2A center pin -ve oddball $24 AC adapter.
I hacked the cord on one 9V wall wart I have, dedicated it only to the labeller. Nothing else in the world uses that.

Depends on how far you look back. Center negative / positive used to be mixed much more back in the old days. Nowadays the world seems to move to center positive but for products (like label printers) which have been on the marked for decades it is hard to change. In case they change the polarity, the adapters can not be interchanged between older and newer models. And think about the cost of logistics involved with phasing out 'center negative' adapters with 'center positive' ones while this doesn't give any benefit to the manufacturer or customer.

There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

It's the most pathetic way to have a monopoly on AC adapters for your products and gouge your customers accordingly.
Looking at the Brother prices for label tape CAD >$20 for a roll, a new labeller is $50 and the AC adapter $31  :palm:

Yeah a lot of these label makers use the business model similar to office printers where they sell you the printer on the cheep but then make up the profit on consumables and accessories.

The prices for label tape cartridges are insane. But luckily you can buy fake compatible tape cartridges from china at only like 2 to 6 USD per cartridge(depends on type, size and how common it is).

If only there was a way to use a different size plug...

(Or switch to USB C)

Maybe it's a way of getting people to blow up their gear by daring to use a non-official adapter. "Sorry, that's not covered by warranty, you'll have to buy a new one".
