IGBT vs MOSFET pros and cons
« on: May 12, 2013, 04:13:33 am »
Dave

I would love to hear you compare and contrast IGBT vs MOSFETs and their typical applications.

You have a gift for making the all electronics technology easy to understand.

THANX

You must realize that bombarding dave with heaps of work risks dis continuong fundamentals friday.  My new favorite segment.  Please don't be lazy and do your own research

This PDF is pretty good at explaining the differences from a selection point of view without getting bogged down in detail

Good PDF from IR.  THANX

It is just a suggestion because Dave always has a simplistic explanation of things and I always pick up a new perspective of a topic even though I already am knowledgeable about that topic or component.

IGBTs generally work better at higher voltages and MOSFETs at lower voltages. Also, high current really pushes in favor of the IGBT.

And high frequency favors MOSFET's, since in IGBTs you cannot speed up the turnoff, so usage of IGBTs above 150-200kHZ is rare and difficult.

Power dissipation is linearly proportional in an lgbt.  Power is exponentially in mosfets because of the on resistance
