As far as something to complement the test equipment in the background of the videos, maybe, but it shouldn't be an ordinary radio. I'd suggest a general coverage communications receiver that supports at least AM, FM, and SSB across its full range. An Icom IC-R7000 perhaps, or maybe an old tube-type shortwave radio for the retro look. A handheld AM/FM scanner covering 30MHz to 1.2GHz or so combined with a shortwave radio doing AM and SSB from 500 kHz through 30MHz is a reasonable combination of radios that allows one to listen to a whole lot of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Combine a general coverage receiver with a DSO and it becomes easy to reverse engineer the protocols for all kinds of radio controlled devices.
When he did the teardown of the aviation ELT beacon a while ago, a receiver to listen to it would have been a nice touch.
