[EU/SE] WTB: Casio FX-61F scientific calculator
« on: June 09, 2021, 06:00:19 pm »
Hey!

I want to buy a Casio FX-61F scientific calculator.

I would prefer personal pickup in the south of Sweden.

Shipping works as long as it comes from an EU county.

I have several TI, Casio and HP calculators so am speaking from experience. If you are getting one just for the formulas get a modern programmable like a TI instead, some come with a suite of engineering formulas you can load in as well as calculator emulation for mobile or PC.

The Casio FX-61F is unique but just not the best. In my opinion the original HP 15C is better built calculator and feels solid, has great buttons and easy to read the functions. I have a modern Casio though with vpam which is dead easy to write out algebraic expressions and is exam approved.

Not trying to put you off buying one but my point is - there's a nice copy of the rescanned manual and  formula list forum members compiled. It makes it clear to see how counterintuitive the FX-61F is compared to solving it algebraically or with a program. Easier to avoid mistakes as well. https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/casio-fx-61f-calculator/

The TI app I use is EEpro but there are other versions for different models. 700 plus EE equations (need I say more). I also have MEpro as well. Both those programs probably could keep someone busy for life.

They need a TI calculator or emulator. To prove I'm not full of shit, on my mobile in the Graph 89 app I loaded in the latest TI rom then the EEpro file (it allows you to side load roms and calculator apps). There are PC emulators around as well that do the same thing.

You can probably get separate EE related apps for mobile and use the web etc, but having your calculator loaded with an EE app, with all the electronic manuals and access on different platforms (even if offline) seems ideal.

Just to be clear here, I'm emulating a product I also physically own.

I'm definitely not married to the fx-61F. I'm not a student. It's all just for hobby and recreation. I picked up some books to finally cement my knowledge about the fundamentals and I found it anmohing to use my phone with the touch screen and the submenus for "advanced" calculator functions.

I tried to look for a scientific calculator app that was still maintained and didn't try to look like a real life calculator trapped inside my phone but there were so many that I just gave up.

Hey! I sadly don't own any TI calculators and the app you mentioned seems abandoned. The last update was posted about 6 years ago. At this point my phone is warning me that the "app might not work correctly".

Whatever I end up getting, I'd prefer a physical device.

I will look into some of the calculators Graph 89 is emulating.

Hej!

The SwissMicros DM42 is a very competent machine. I would look at it twice. Correction: I'm looking at it, eagerly, every time I get it out of the case. Yes, a happy owner.

You might also care to take a look at https://www.numworks.com/. I still prefer my FX-4000P, but its nice to have a backup plan.

We are getting a bit OT here, but SwissMicro or pick up a used HP48? Some of the best calculators out there imho.

Thanks for the suggestions!

In the meantime I was eyeing the HP Prime G2. I found that there is an Android app that to me looks like an emulator for the HP Prime G2, so now I'm evaluating that and I will see if it is something that I want to eventually buy.

Schematics, PCB layout and source code for a commercial product?
What year is this?!
Don't they know that they are giving away trade secrets?

Sarcasm aside, I like this product.

Think I prefer the HP Prime G2. I like the concept though of the Numworks, if they have reasonable buttons and thought about the battery choice for longevity it's a good candidate for a long service life EE calc.
