DER DE-5000 on eBay for cheap! (US only :( )
« on: July 13, 2014, 12:57:27 am »
All,

Just bought one of these from this seller for $3 more, but shoot, still an amazing price. LCR Meter, short leads, tweezers, and ground lead for $82 USD. Seller even paid for USPS Priority International (Got to the US West Coast in less than a week from Japan).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261527961316

No idea how/why he's selling them for so much less than everyone else on eBay. My unit seems to work great from the testing I've done (which isn't a lot, but enough to know it "works").

So, if you need an LCR meter, this one would be REALLY hard to beat for price, or features for that matter.

* I am in no way affiliated with the seller. I've just needed an LCR meter, and found him way below everyone else's price, and bought the last one he had last week, now he has more... so, no idea. Maybe he's got some contact with DER's direct sales.

This is a really nice LCR meter, and at this price it's irresistible.

Last time I was in Japan I went looking for it in Akihabara, Tokyo's famous electronics district, and it was absolutely nowhere to be found. Bizarre.

Boo! Okay, will edit my post to indicate US only, maybe.

Know anyone in the states that would forward to ya? :)

I just ordered one of these, thanks for posting the link  :)

FYI:

Here is a link to the product sheet: http://www.deree.com.tw/downloadfiles/28-eng%29DE-5000.pdf

and here is a link to Dave's tear-down video: which is for the IET DE-5000 LCR Meter. I do knot know what the differences are between the IET and the DER DE are? Is it a simple re-branding?

DER is the OEM for IET, so it's the same.

Only think I have against the unit is it seems much bigger than it needs to be. But, whatever. Does what I need, and "easy" to use (actually, it's pretty complex if you have never had something that measures phase angle, dissipation, etc). Not sure if I'm going to now sell my "Blue" ESR meter.

I don't think it's too big. with the combination of the screen + buttons + connectivity and that fact that it stands up well. additionally, it's build so damn solidly there's no flex to be had.
(I just wanted another one, so no big loss)

It's not too big, it's bigger than it needs to be given what's in it. The buttons are bigger than they need to be, etc. but it's fine, and easy to use at a distance. It's VERY solid. Though, lighter than I was expecting when I first saw it, and picked it up. So really, very solid, just not very dense. :p

I went looking for a 9v wall wart for it today, and came home empty. The power jack is a bit of an odd size, and worse, it's deeper than normal. :/ ah well.

I did fine a decent storage box for it though. One of these: http://m.target.com/p/sterilite-small-storage-bin-with-clips-set-of-6-green/-/A-13487672

Fits well, and keeps the pieces together when not using it.

Anyway, hopefully the seller will open up to more than the US.

Thanks man. I proudly picked one up this evening. Can't beat the price by $40-$60.
See you now.

I just noticed that the seller is changing the listing to say that there is more quantity available. Essentially so you feel pressed to buy it and then it turns out there's a thousand of them instead of just the 3 or five the listing says.
See you now.

LOL.  Yep.  About 10 hours ago he showed 2 for sell.  Now he shows 5.  The price went up $5 too.  It is now $87.

I'm still tempted to grab one.

They still show as $82 to me. But I do see he's added stock. Still a hard price to beat. :)

That's funny.  I still had the tab open and it showed $87, 5 available.  I refreshed and it now shows $82, 7 available.

That was my take. Still haven't found a power adapter that fits. Anyone that has the official AC adapter want to measure the length and width of the barrel? Pin size would be awesome too, but probably harder to attain.

Official IET DE-5000 wall wart.
Barrel OD = 3.47mm
Barrel ID = 1.346mm
Barrel length = 12.25mm

Haha, leave it to Roberenz to give you the values to four sig figs.  To be honest, I don't think I would even trust my ability to measure the diameters to that level of accuracy. Mass? Sure. Diameter? Nope.

Says the chemist. Kinda hard (and pointless) to measure dimensions of most chemicals. Leave that to crystallography and physists. ;p

I'm scared to ask, but roberenz, what machinist tool do you have for the interior of the barrel? I'm assuming to get the exterior to that precision was a micrometer. Though funny you gave mm when I thought you worked in thou's. :p

I have gage pin sets in .001" increments that I put into the hole. A .053" pin fit all the way in and a .054" pin only started in.  .053" = 1.3462mm but the pins are only accurate to +0" -.0002" which is .005mm.  So including the 3rd digit was silly on my part.

While normally true, a lot of what I work on is nanometer scale (I'm a nanomaterials chemist aka materials science chemistry). So it is very easy to measure using a SEM and software like ImageJ.  ;D For mass, we have several 5.5 digit scales (can measure reliably down to 100's of ug's on a bad day and 10's of ug's on a good day).

Still very impressive all the same, hopefully I didn't come off as if I was making fun of you.

Oh, of course. Still. The right tools!

That said, makes me wonder how often gauge pins (and for that matter gauge shims) should be replaced due to wear. Guess not often assuming you don't force them and wear off material.

So, like self assembly, or...? That pad of ochem was a lot of fun. Figures you'd be a materials chemist. Also thought of metallurgy as an exception as well (though, that's into crystallography). SEMs would make that doable. Boy I miss chem. :p

We exploit methods to "focus" the products into relatively monodisperse populations. Methods like dynamic focusing and Ostwald ripening. It works surprisingly well overall.
